The approach target position should be recalculated if the target is further away than the weapon range times this. ApproachTarget is an AI script action which picks a target within its weapons Range= and if it gets further away than that range times this value the AI knows the target is moving and that it will need to re-figure where it is. This can be overridden in the units' entry with the CanApproachTarget= statement.
